A transmission control module (TCM) helps control shift timing, gear changes, and overall transmission performance. When the TCM begins to fail, a vehicle can develop serious drivability problems.
Common symptoms of a bad transmission control module include:
Delayed shifting
The vehicle may hesitate before changing gears or feel slow to respond.
Harsh shifting
A failing TCM can cause hard or jerky gear changes during acceleration or deceleration.
Stuck in one gear
Some vehicles may go into limp mode and stay stuck in one gear to protect the transmission.
Transmission warning light
You may see a warning light or check engine light if the TCM detects a fault.
Poor fuel economy
Improper shifting can cause the engine to work harder and reduce gas mileage.
Trouble downshifting
The transmission may not downshift correctly when slowing down or stopping.
Unpredictable shifting
Gear changes may happen at the wrong time or feel inconsistent.
